As wildfires burned across Nebraska throughout 2026, daily updates often focused on one key number: percent contained. While that figure became a headline metric for fires like the Road 203 Fire and the massive blazes in Morrill and surrounding counties, it does not reflect how much of a fire is out, or even how much land has burned.
Instead, containment is a measure of control.
Fire officials calculate containment by mapping the full perimeter of a wildfire, the total outer edge of where the fire is burning. From there, crews determine how much of that perimeter has been secured with control lines. These lines can include bulldozed fire breaks, hand-dug trenches, roads, rivers, or areas that have already burned and no longer have fuel.
But the process is more hands-on and judgment-based than many realize.
“The containment itself is defined by… assessing what are the odds of that fire escaping the control lines,” said Captain Brian de los Santos of Incident Management Team Six, who was deployed in central Nebraska during the fires.
That assessment is not based on a single measurement, but on field evaluation. Supervisors are often physically walking sections of the fire line, checking conditions firsthand.
“It takes days, sometimes weeks… to literally put our hand in the dirt for that whole distance and make sure things like embers… won’t spread,” de los Santos explained.
The percentage reported to the public reflects how much of that perimeter firefighters are confident will hold. For example, if a fire has a 100-mile perimeter and 40 miles are considered secure, the fire is listed at 40 percent contained.
That number can change quickly.
Nebraska’s 2026 fires, many of them fueled by strong winds and dry grassland conditions, showed how volatile containment can be. Wind shifts can push flames across containment lines, creating new fire edges and expanding the perimeter. When that happens, the containment percentage can stall, or even drop, despite ongoing firefighting efforts.
Fire officials say that uncertainty is exactly why containment updates are not constant.
“When you think about… possibly hundreds of miles of fire line, that just takes a lot of time to determine,” de los Santos said.
Crews also have to make strategic decisions. In many cases, especially in rural Sandhills terrain, firefighters prioritize protecting homes, infrastructure, and livestock over building new containment lines in remote areas. That can slow the overall increase in containment, even as critical assets are successfully defended.
Another important distinction is that containment does not mean the fire is out.
Even at 100 percent containment, flames can continue to burn within the established perimeter. Firefighters must still monitor hotspots, extinguish smoldering areas, and ensure the fire does not reignite or breach containment lines.
“We don’t want… an escape fire,” de los Santos said, noting that crews wait until they are confident conditions will hold before increasing containment percentages.
Throughout the 2026 wildfire season, containment percentages served as a critical benchmark for both emergency responders and the public. But understanding what that number actually represents provides a clearer picture of the ongoing fight, one focused not just on extinguishing flames, but on stopping their spread.
