GRAND ISLAND — An 82-year-old man has reported losing $9,000 in a phone scam earlier this week.
According to the Grand Island Police Department, the victim filed a delayed report Tuesday, April 7, indicating he had been defrauded of the money.
Authorities are investigating the case as theft by deception involving more than $5,000.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation says financial scams continue to disproportionately impact older Americans, with schemes ranging from romance and lottery scams to sweepstakes fraud.
The FBI reports that seniors lose more than $3 billion annually to fraud, with cases continuing to rise alongside the aging population.
