BROKEN BOW — Critical fire weather conditions are expected across much of western and north central Nebraska today, prompting the National Weather Service in North Platte to issue a Red Flag Warning through mid-evening.
The warning is in effect from late morning through 9 p.m. CDT, with a combination of warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds creating an elevated risk for rapid fire growth.
Forecasters say afternoon temperatures will climb into the mid-70s in western Nebraska and reach the mid-80s farther east. At the same time, relative humidity levels are expected to drop sharply, falling between 10 and 20 percent.
Winds will also play a significant role, with sustained west winds ranging from 15 to 25 miles per hour and gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour.
Those conditions create an environment where any fire that starts can spread quickly and become difficult to control.
The warning area includes a large portion of the state, stretching from the Panhandle through north central Nebraska and into parts of central Nebraska, including communities such as Broken Bow, Burwell, Valentine, and Grand Island.
Officials strongly advise against any outdoor burning during this time. Residents are also urged to avoid activities that could spark a fire, including the use of equipment that produces sparks or open flames.
Fire officials emphasize that even a small ignition could escalate rapidly under these conditions, putting both property and lives at risk.
