The Broken Bow Police Department has released new details with an investigation involving the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and a crash earlier this month.
At around 9:30am on April 5, 2026, officers received a report of a vehicle that had been used without the owner’s permission. Later that same morning, the Custer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motor vehicle accident involving that same vehicle on Road 450 south of Highway 2.
Authorities say the Broken Bow Police Department worked in coordination with the Custer County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the incident. Through the course of that investigation, sufficient evidence was developed to obtain an arrest warrant.
On April 10, Austin Welty, a 33 year old from Broken Bow, was located and arrested on the active warrant.
Welty faces charges including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, criminal mischief, and terroristic threats.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information may be released as it becomes available.
