The Miller Fire in Dawson County was estimated to have burned around 750 acres as of Friday afternoon. Dawson County Emergency Manager Brian Woldt said the fire was largely contained but, was still being monitored by firefighters day and night as they change out.
The cause of the initial fire on Wednesday was believed to have come from a lightning strike as storms moved throughout the area. Fire erupted in the same area on Thursday. Woldt described that cause as a spark from the burned area getting into an unburned area.
Firefighters came from surrounding counties along with water trucks and tractors with discs.
One firefighter was injured Thursday when a truck sank into a rut, He was checked out at the hospital and back on the firetruck Friday.
Firefighter spouses and volunteers were collecting donated supplies at the Miller Fire Hall to be distributed among the firefighters.
Rachel Schroeder, wife of the Miller Fire Chief, said they have been working to feed firefighters three meals a day along with snacks in between and also keeping them hydrated. They were collecting donated supplies at the Miller Fire Hall.
Woldt encourages everyone to be vigilant for fires.
