A historical bus tour is giving Custer County residents a chance to step back in time and explore communities, with seats still available for this weekend’s event.
The tour, organized as a fundraiser for the Custer County Museum, will take participants across the county to visit former town sites, homesteads and historic landmarks, which some are now fields or small cemeteries.
“Our historical tour is sparked on our anniversary of Custer County…and the 250th of America this year,” Custer County Museum Curator, Tammy Hendrickson said.
The event begins at 6:00pm this evening, April 23, with a presentation at the museum featuring historic photos and stories from across the county. The main tour will take place Saturday, April 25, departing from the museum at 9:00am for an all day trip across a portion of Custer County.
Stops include areas near Broken Bow, Westerville, Comstock, Sargent and Victoria Springs, highlighting former communities and significant historical sites.
The route revisits one of the museum’s earlier tours first conducted in 2013, part of a series that has covered multiple regions of the county over the years.
Hendrickson noted that this experience offers more than just a history lesson.
Participation is limited by available seating on the bus, but Hendrickson says there are still spots open. Attendees can choose to participate in both the Thursday presentation and Saturday tour or attend one portion of the event.
As mentioned previously today’s program begins at 6:00pm at the museum, while check in for Saturday’s tour starts around 8:30am.
In additional to exploring historic sites, Hendrickson said the tour includes narration, printed materials and opportunities for participants to share their own connections to the area.
Hendrickson says the tour is part of a broader effort to preserve and share local history with the public, offering a unique look at communities that helped shape Custer County.
