An Axtell woman was injured Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highways 6 and 34 and 20 Road. The call was received just after 2 pm with Captain Jared Nedrig investigating.
Authorities say a semi-tractor driven by Chad Tichota of Norfolk was traveling westbound on Highway 6 and 34 behind two other vehicles.
The lead vehicle, driven by Laurel Thorell, had stopped in the westbound lane with a turn signal on, waiting for oncoming traffic to clear before making a left turn onto 20 Road. A second vehicle, driven by Ed Forkner of Funk, was able to avoid the stopped vehicle by swerving onto the north shoulder.
However, investigators say the semi was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of Thorell’s vehicle. The impact forced her vehicle across the eastbound lane and into the south ditch.
Thorell was injured in the crash and transported by Phelps Memorial Ambulance to Kearney Regional Medical Center. The semi, driven by Tichota, sustained minor damage, while major damage was done to Thorell’s vehicle.
The Kearney County Sheriff’s Office, Funk First Responders, and the Holdrege Fire Department assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
