Oxford, Neb. — An overturned concrete mixer caused a big problem in Oxford on Tuesday.
Just after 7:30 a.m., first responders were called to the intersection of Highways 46 and 136 in Oxford and a prompt decision was made to close to the railroad tracks.
A fully-loaded concrete truck, carrying 11 yards of concrete, overturned.
Most of the concrete stayed in the drum, but some spilled onto the road.
The driver managed to escape the vehicle before first responders arrived and was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The crash and subsequent cleanup forced both highways and the adjacent railroad to close for several hours.
During assessment of the driver, Oxford EMS was dispatched for another call for a child with a hand injury. EMTs were available and able to respond in another ambulance.
The child was transported to the hospital.
Oxford EMS notes this is the third time in two months they’ve had multiple calls at the same time.
Oxford first responders were appreciative of the mutual aid provided by Stamford Fire and assistance from the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office, Furnas County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska Department of Transportation, BNSF Railway and Randy’s & Brian’s Towing.
