Lexington, Neb. — Central Nebraska, especially Lexington, was ground zero for severe thunderstorms Saturday evening that produced damaging winds, large hail and a possible tornado.
McKenzie Barry, Community Relations Supervisor for the Corporate Communications Department of NPPD says at the height of the storm, approximately 1,460 customers in the Lexington, Nebraska area were without power. Barry says by Sunday afternoon, crews were able restore power to all but a small number of customers. More from KRVN’s Bob Brogan…
The strongest reported wind gusts topped 79 mph near Lexington, with reports of building damage, including roofs and siding, street flooding, snapped power lines, power outages, and large tree limbs brought down across the region.
There were also reports of baseball-sized hail near Wellfleet, which shattered and damaged vehicle windshields and a possible tornado was reported north of Wellfleet, south of North Platte in rural Lincoln county.
As of Sunday afternoon, there were no reports of injuries from the storm.
Lexington city crews will begin picking up tree limbs on Monday and will continue working throughout the week.
Residents are asked to place limbs at the curb prior to pickup and keep all vehicles clear of the area so crews can work safely and efficiently.
