Holdrege, Neb.-The annual Rocky Mountain Race Week gets underway this week. Rocky Mountain Race Week (RMRW) is the ultimate test of drag racers, competing on quarter mile strips every day for a week. Rocky Mountain Race Week has roots tied back to the Kearney Raceway Park. The event was started in Kearney almost 20 years ago by Matt and June Frost.
The event kicks off Friday, June 5th in Great Bend, Kansas with the pre-party. The racers then hit the strip Saturday, June 6th and make their way to Kearney, Nebraska for the second day of racing Sunday, June 7th at Kearney Raceway Park. On their way through, the racers will be coming through Holdrege as the mural at the Holdrege Eagles Club was chosen as one of the photo checkpoints. Racers are required to take a picture at certain photo documentation stops along the way to prove that the car is being driven on the route and not being towed or anything that would make the racer ineligible.
Joe Roach, who manages the Kearney Raceway Park said that the racers will be coming through Holdrege Sunday June 7th between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm. He estimated around 275 high-horsepower cars will travel through on their way to Kearney.
