CUSTER COUNTY, Neb. — A statewide seatbelt enforcement campaign led to nearly 200 traffic stops in Custer County over the second half of May.
The Custer County Sheriff’s Office took part in the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s “Make It Click” campaign from May 15 through May 31. The effort was aimed at increasing seatbelt use and reducing dangerous driving.
During the campaign, deputies made 191 traffic stops and issued 119 citations. The largest number came from speeding violations, with 91 drivers cited. Eleven seatbelt citations were also issued.
The enforcement period also resulted in one DUI arrest. According to the sheriff’s office, the driver was traveling 113 miles per hour in a 65-mile-per-hour zone. Deputies also issued three minor in possession citations and made two felony arrests.
The campaign also included seatbelt surveys before and after the enforcement period. In the first survey of 100 vehicles, 43 drivers were buckled up, and 57 were not. In the follow-up survey, 60 drivers were wearing seatbelts, while 40 were not.
The sheriff’s office said the numbers point to improved seatbelt use during the campaign.
CCSO is reminding motorists that seatbelts can make a life-saving difference in a crash. Deputies said traffic laws will continue to be enforced, and drivers and passengers are encouraged to buckle up on every trip.
