Omaha, Neb. — The Surface Transportation Board’s review of the Union Pacific proposed acquisition of Norfolk Southern is on pause.
The STB announced that the two railroad companies will have until July 27 to submit additional information to their application.
If needed, the railroad companies may ask for a 30-day extension.
The updated timetable for the Union Pacific (UP) and Norfolk Southern (NS) merger shifts the final transaction deadline to mid-2027.
The delay likely pushes a possible close of the merger by Fall 2027 to a “best-case scenario.”
Nebraska Examiner reports the railroads have said the $85 billion deal would provide a one-carrier coast-to-coast rail system that would create a combined enterprise of more than $250 billion.
