The Harlan County Sheriff’s Office was called to a two-vehicle accident near the Highway 6/34 and Highway 4 junction located southwest of Atlanta. The call came over the noon hour on Tuesday.
The accident involved a semi pulling a tank trailer traveling eastbound on Highway 6 and another vehicle traveling westbound. The driver of the semi said he tried to avoid the westbound vehicle as it crossed the center line. The vehicle hit the rear end of the trailer before it ended on its side in the north ditch.
According to the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office, an occupant in the westbound vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the semi did not need medical attention. The names of those involved are not being released at this time.
Emergency responders from Furnas County arrived on the scene to offer assistance, along with emergency medical services from surrounding communities. Traffic was being directed through along one lane by members of Nebraska Department of Transportation.
