BROKEN BOW — As electric bicycles continue to grow in popularity across Nebraska communities, Melham Medical Center is encouraging riders to prioritize safety through a new public awareness campaign focused on e-bike operation and injury prevention.
The campaign highlights the benefits of e-bikes as a convenient and enjoyable form of transportation while reminding riders that the motor-assisted bicycles are capable of reaching higher speeds than traditional bicycles. Because of those increased speeds, officials say following basic safety practices can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and serious injuries.
Among the key recommendations is the use of a properly fitted helmet for every ride. According to the safety guide, helmets can greatly reduce the risk of head injuries in the event of a crash.
Riders are also encouraged to follow all traffic laws, including obeying traffic signs and signals, riding in the direction of traffic, yielding to pedestrians, and using hand signals when making turns.
Visibility is another major focus of the campaign. Melham Medical Center recommends wearing bright or reflective clothing, using front and rear lights, adding reflectors to bicycles, and making eye contact with drivers whenever possible to ensure riders are seen on roadways.
The safety message also emphasizes controlling speed, especially near intersections, pedestrians, and unfamiliar routes. Riders are advised to adjust their speed based on road and weather conditions.
Before each ride, e-bike users should inspect their equipment, including tire pressure, brakes, battery attachment, and lights, to ensure the bike is operating safely.
Battery safety is another important component of the campaign. Riders are encouraged to use only manufacturer-approved chargers, avoid charging damaged batteries, store batteries away from extreme temperatures, and never leave charging batteries unattended.
The awareness effort also includes guidance for parents whose children ride e-bikes. Parents are encouraged to make sure young riders wear helmets, understand local traffic laws, know how to safely operate their bikes, and practice riding in safe areas before traveling on public streets.
Melham Medical Center says the goal of the campaign is simple: help community members enjoy the benefits of e-bikes while reducing the risk of preventable injuries through safe riding habits.
