Nebraska History Takes Center Stage in New Exhibition at Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A rare piece of Nebraska history is taking center stage at the Smithsonian this week as part of a major new national exhibition. Opening Thursday at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, “From These Lands: Sharing Our Natural and Cultural Heritage” will feature more than 600 artifacts from across the country—but among them is a fossil tortoise discovered in Nebraska, one of seven items representing the state.Rarely Seen Nebraska Artifact Featured in Brand-New Smithsonian America 250 Exhibition
The fossil, known as Stylemys, was first described in 1851 and is recognized as the earliest recorded tortoise fossil in North America. Scientists say the land-dwelling species shows how little tortoise body structures have changed over millions of years, offering insight into Nebraska’s ancient landscape. The exhibition, part of America’s 250th anniversary celebration, is expected to draw millions of visitors and highlights Nebraska’s unique role in the nation’s natural and scientific history.
