Lincoln, Neb. — West Nile Virus (WNV) has been confirmed in Nebraska, according to the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD).
The virus has been detected in mosquito pools in Lincoln; however, no human cases have been reported statewide as of late June 2026.
LLCHD urges residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites over the Fourth of July holiday weekend and to reduce mosquito breeding areas around the home.
Most infected people don’t become sick; however, about one in five develop a fever with other symptoms such as a headache, body aches, or a rash.
Health officials urge people to protect themselves from mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves and pants, limiting time outdoors during dusk and dawn, and applying Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered repellent to exposed skin.
There is no WNV vaccine for humans.The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services monitors and publishes data on the virus throughout the primary WNV season (June 1–Sept. 30).
