GRAND ISLAND — Grand Island police made arrests in two separate incidents over the weekend, including a traffic stop that led to drug charges and a domestic assault investigation involving allegations of strangulation.
The first incident happened at 8:51 p.m. on June 27 during a traffic stop on South Locust Street. Grand Island Police Division Chief Dean Elliott said Mitchell Reed of Grand Island was stopped after he was observed making a turn into an improper lane.
During the stop, police said Reed was found to have a small quantity of methamphetamine. He was arrested for misdemeanor driving during revocation, felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia as an infraction, improper turn, and misdemeanor first-offense DUI involving drugs.
A passenger in the vehicle, Nicole Cronland, was also arrested after police said she was found with a small quantity of methamphetamine. Cronland was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia as an infraction.
Police made another arrest the following morning in a separate domestic assault case. At 11:09 a.m. June 28, officers arrested 21-year-old Esai Santos Cotom of Grand Island after it was reported that he had strangled his 19-year-old girlfriend.
Elliott said the woman had marks on her neck and face. She was eventually able to flee the residence several hours later and call 911.
Santos Cotom was arrested for misdemeanor third-offense domestic violence assault causing bodily injury, felony tampering with physical evidence, felony false imprisonment, felony assault by strangulation or suffocation, and felony terroristic threats.
Both cases remain under investigation by Grand Island police.
