A person was killed early Wednesday morning after an SUV left Highway 81 and was struck by a train near York.
According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, York County Emergency Communications received a report from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad at about 4:20 a.m. that a locomotive had collided with a vehicle. Investigators say a southbound SUV left the highway near mile marker 63 and came to rest on railroad tracks below the roadway. An eastbound BNSF locomotive then struck the vehicle. Responding deputies and York Police officers found the driver deceased at the scene. No railroad employees were injured.
Authorities are withholding the identity of the driver pending positive identification and notification of family members. The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact the York County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office also thanked the York Police Department, York Fire Department, Nebraska Department of Transportation, Moguls Towing, and BNSF Railway for their assistance at the scene.
