Irrigators with electric motors across Nebraska can expect extended load control measures through the coming weekend as high temperatures and strong irrigation demand continue to push electrical usage higher. Cole Brodine, manager of engineering for Dawson Public Power District, says load control has already been implemented several times this week and is expected to continue through Sunday. According to Brodine, irrigation customers could see up to 12 hours of control on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with a maximum of six hours of control on Sunday.
Load management is coordinated among Nebraska’s public power districts, with Nebraska Public Power District monitoring system demand and determining when irrigation load reductions are needed. Brodine says the anticipated controls are being driven by widespread irrigation activity and forecast heat index values near 100 degrees across the state. Irrigators needing power for temporary maintenance work on wells are encouraged to contact Dawson Public Power District for an override.
