Grand Island, Neb. — Two Grand Island men remain in jail after a July 5 attack that lead to the death of another Grand Island man, 41-year-old Matthew Bishop. Charges against 23-year-old Jesus Reyes and 23-year-old Angel Vega were updated Monday.
Reyes now faces a manslaughter charge in addition to first-degree assault. Vega is charged with manslaughter, accessory to a felony, and first-degree assault.
Officers responded late Sunday, July 5, to a report of a male victim laying face down with severe head injuries, later identified as Bishop.
According to a news release from Grand Island police, Bishop was taken to CHI St. Francis Emergency Room before being transported to a hospital in Omaha. He was eventually removed from life support.
Police updated the charges after finishing Bishop’s autopsy last week and reviewing new video evidence.
Following the review of the evidence, prosecutors determined there was no evidence to establish that the defendants intended to kill Bishop.
The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information related to this case is encouraged to contact the Grand Island Police Department at (308) 385-5400 or Grand Island-Hall County Crime Stoppers at (308) 381-8822
