Central Community College is set to expand their residence hall offerings after this school year. The CCC Board of Trustees approved a new residence hall at their Grand Island campus at their June meeting, and construction will start this summer.
The 40,000-square-foot, two-story, 81-bed building to be constructed on the northwest corner of the campus. The residence hall will also include shared kitchen areas, and laundry facilities. A pickleball court and a sand volleyball court will also be built. Construction is expected to take the entire 2026-27 academic year, and the cost is expected to be $14 million.
In past years, CCC-Grand Island has been upgrading their infrastructure over the past few years, and also overhauled its food service operations at the campus in order to accommodate the upcoming dorm.
Central Community College has been setting aside money from their capital improvement funds over the past few years to pay for the dorm, and will be utilizing revenue bonds for paying the rest of the dorm cost.
The new dormitory is the first one for the CCC – Grand Island campus. Previously, students had to commute or rent privately owned apartments outside of Central Community College. Central Community College has dorms at its campuses in Columbus and Hastings; and has an agreement for CCC – Kearney students to stay at the dormitories at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
“I am incredibly excited for our students to experience on-campus living in Grand Island,” said CCC-Grand Island President Dr. Marcie Kemnitz. “This will provide them with more opportunities to engage in the college experience and the community.”
The CCC – Grand Island campus offers 22 career education programs and academic transfer courses in 18 areas for students. With seven locations across the 25 county district, Central Community College had over 6,841 students enrolled in the Fall 2025 semester, with 2,214 on-campus students and 4,627 distance learning students.
