Lexington, Neb. — A late Sunday night house fire caused extensive damage to a home in south-central Lexington.
The Lexington Volunteer Fire Department was called around 11 p.m.
Fire Chief Bo Berry says the Lexington Police Department arrived first at 306 West Walnut and reported heavy fire showing through the roof and the back of the house.
Fire crews then saw flames coming through the roof and a south bedroom window…
No injuries were reported.
Chief Berry says a neighbor across the street saw the fire and called 9-1-1.
The homeowner was driving back from Walmart when firefighters arrived.
Berry says severe roof and electrical damage mean the house is likely a total loss.
The State Fire Marshal traced the cause to an electrical short from an extension cord on the second-floor landing.
Fourteen firefighters responded with three engines, a rescue unit, an air trailer and a water tanker for standby.
Crews stayed on the scene for about three hours.
The fire department was assisted by the Lexington Police Department, Nebraska Public Power District, and Black Hills Energy.
The American Red Cross helped the displaced homeowner find a place to stay.
