A 73-year-old Hastings woman was killed Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 in Hall County. Hall County Sheriff’s deputies were called to mile marker 312 around 7:50 a.m. after a collision involving an SUV and a semi-truck.
Investigators say a 2012 Dodge Journey was traveling eastbound in the westbound passing lane when it collided with a westbound 2019 International semi-truck. The driver of the SUV, Delores Roberts of Hastings, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say Roberts was wearing a seat belt and the vehicle’s front airbag deployed. The semi driver, 46-year-old Josh Wakefield of North Platte, was transported to Grand Island Regional Hospital for evaluation of possible injuries. Wakefield was also wearing a seat belt.
Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash. Investigators are considering extremely low visibility caused by dense fog as a contributing factor. Hall County crash investigators remain at work on the case, with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol, Doniphan QRT, Grand Island Fire Department and the Hall County Attorney’s Office. Next of kin have been notified.
