COZAD, Neb. — A central Nebraska woman is hoping to educate the public about lipedema, a chronic condition that affects an estimated one in nine women worldwide but is often mistaken for other disorders. Sara Drongesen says lipedema is a hormonal and hereditary disease that primarily affects women and causes abnormal fat buildup in both sides of the body. Unlike lymphedema, which typically affects a single limb, lipedema is bilateral and often develops during major hormonal changes such as puberty and menopause. Drongesen says many women wait 10 to 20 years for an accurate diagnosis and may also experience related conditions such as Hashimoto’s disease and polycystic ovary syndrome.
Treatment can include manual lymphatic drainage, compression garments, compression pumps, and specialized liposuction, though Drungenson says access to care and insurance coverage remain challenges for many patients. To increase awareness and connect those living with the disease, she is organizing the Lipedema Fun Run and Walk on August 22 at the Cozad Wellness Center with registration open at 8:30am. The event will feature a one-mile walk and 5K option, with an emphasis on education, networking and support rather than competition. Contact Drongesen at 725-222-9765 for more information.
Drungenson says proceeds from the event will benefit Lipedema Simplified, a nonprofit organization that supports research and education. She chose the Wellness Center venue to ensure people with mobility limitations, including those who use walkers or wheelchairs, can comfortably participate indoors.
