The Lexington City Council approved a $285,000 agreement with JEO Consulting Group to complete the city’s Flood Risk Reduction Assessment. The action was taken during the Council’s meeting Tuesday evening in City Hall. Assistant City Manager Bill Brecks said JEO was selected from four firms and was chosen in part because of its previous work on the project. Seventy-five percent of the cost will be covered by FEMA funding.

Council members also ratified the city’s previously approved purchase of land from Tyson Fresh Meats. City Attorney Brian Copley said the purchase, which was initially approved in April and finalized last week, includes about 140 acres east of Tyson and roughly 284 acres southeast of the plant building that include the wastewater treatment facility. Officials emphasized the action was simply ratifying a transaction that had already been approved and completed.

The council also approved an ordinance prohibiting parking along the south side of 20th Street between Erie Street and Ridgeway. City officials said the change is intended to improve safety for pedestrians, especially children, who have been forced into traffic to get around parked vehicles. In addition, the council approved replacing traffic signal controls with a four-way stop at the intersection of 6th and Grant Streets. Officials said aging traffic signal equipment has become difficult and expensive to repair, and a four-way stop will offer a less costly alternative while maintaining traffic flow.
