Gothenburg, Neb. — Nebraska Missing Persons Day is an official day of awareness recognized annually on October 17 to honor missing individuals, support their grieving families, and highlight cold cases across the state.
It was Officially established by the Nebraska Legislature through LB1102 in the spring of 2024, and signed into law by Governor Jim Pillen.
The date was chosen in honor of Regina “Gina” Bos (Boss), who disappeared from downtown Lincoln, Nebraska on that day in 2000. Her disappearance remains one of the Lincoln Police Department’s oldest unsolved missing persons cases.
The observance of the special day is Championed and sponsored by the GINA for Missing Persons FOUNDation, founded by Gina Bos’s sister, Jannel Rap.
The day aims to combat the isolation felt by families of the missing, encourage media outreach, and prompt the public to share active cases through resources like the Nebraska State Patrol Missing Persons Database or 411GINA.org.
One notable missing person is Christi Jo Nichols, who vanished September 23, 1987, from Gothenburg. Her disappearance remains an active cold case investigated by the Nebraska State Patrol.
