BROKEN BOW – The Broken Bow Public Schools Board of Education met Monday, Oct. 19.
Board members unanimously approved policies 1001, 1002, 1003, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 following a recent work session.
The board also briefly discussed the district’s mission statement, which remains under review as part of the district’s five-year review process. Additional discussion is expected in November.
During his report, Superintendent Darren Tobey provided an update on upcoming teacher contract negotiations.
Representatives of the teachers’ negotiating team received information from the district Monday and will conduct a compensation comparison study before requesting a formal meeting with the board.
The first negotiating session is not expected to take place until December at the earliest.
Board members noted the study will be somewhat different this year because of changes to the district’s salary schedule. The comparison will examine the district’s three-column structure, rather than the single-column schedule used previously.
The teachers’ negotiating team is expected to contact district officials once the study is completed to arrange an initial meeting.
Several student were also recognized.
Two students, Elenai Hernandez and Tristan Taylor, were selected by the Nebraska School Activities Association to perform the national anthem at State Cross Country in Kearney Friday.
Students interested in performing at state championship events submit recordings of themselves singing the national anthem, which are then reviewed as part of the selection process.
Madden Kleeb was recognized for being selected to All-State Choir.
Tobey also reminded board members that students would be traveling to Indianapolis for the National FFA Convention, with the group scheduled to depart Tuesday morning.
The board also received a reminder about the district’s upcoming Veterans Day program, scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 11 in the school gymnasium.
The annual program will feature a guest speaker, followed by coffee and cookies in the cafeteria. Community members are welcome to attend.
During the treasurer’s report, board members reviewed monthly revenue of approximately $1.4 million and expenditures of approximately $1.3 million. A question was raised regarding approximately $9,000 in concrete work. Tobey explained the improvements included sidewalk connections near the boys’ locker room area and a pad in the practice field.
Looking ahead, the board will hold a work session at noon Monday, Nov. 2. The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16.
