Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers has joined the Federal Trade Commission and 19 other states in a lawsuit accusing Dollar General of routinely charging customers more at the register than the prices advertised on store shelves, product tags, and promotions.
The lawsuit alleges the retailer generated millions of dollars in revenue through the practice, affecting consumers nationwide. According to the complaint, thousands of Dollar General stores failed to maintain adequate safeguards to prevent pricing discrepancies, resulting in unlawful overcharges that disproportionately impacted vulnerable shoppers.
Hilgers said Nebraska consumers deserve to pay the price that is advertised. He accused Dollar General of betraying customer trust and said the state is committed to holding the company accountable and protecting consumers from deceptive pricing practices. The complaint also points to tens of thousands of customer complaints across the country, alleging the company was aware of the issue but failed to take sufficient action to correct it. The lawsuit seeks to address what state and federal officials describe as a long-running pattern of misleading pricing and consumer overcharges.
