Two newly elected members of the Lexington City Council say they plan to focus on accessibility, transparency and community engagement as they prepare to take office.
Handy Marin Diaz and Lizbeth Lopez, both Lexington High School graduates, were elected this month after running campaigns centered on listening to residents and increasing involvement in local government. Marin Diaz, who works for a local nonprofit organization, said her experience helping families in the community motivated her to seek public office. Lopez, a local real estate agent, said conversations with residents and concerns raised following the Tyson plant closure encouraged her to become more involved in city leadership.
The pair campaigned together, hosting informal community events at local businesses where residents could share concerns and ideas. Lopez said those conversations revealed a desire for greater transparency and accessibility from local government, while Marin Diaz said residents also discussed issues involving mental health, economic challenges and access to community resources.
Both women said they hope to maintain strong communication with residents and encourage more community participation in city government. They also noted the significant support they received from Hispanic residents during the campaign and said they hope their election inspires more young people to become involved in public service.
Marin Diaz and Lopez also acknowledged support from Lead Nebraska PAC, which provided financial assistance and mentorship during their campaigns. According to campaign finance reports each candidate received $6,000 in support from the organization.
