BROKEN BOW – The Broken Bow American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars invite the public to salute War War II veteran and Purple Heart winner Wayne Mills on Monday.
Mills died on Wednesday at the age of 99. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, June 16th, at 2 p.m. at the Broken Bow United Methodist Church. Graveside services with military honors will follow at Westerville Cemetery.
Friends, neighbors, veterans and community members are asked to line First Avenue in Broken Bow with American flags as the funeral procession makes its way from the church to the cemetery.
Flags will be available for pick up starting at 3 p.m. at 911 South 1st Avenue and they ask that attendees be in place by 3:45 p.m.
Mills was a 1943 graduate of Westerville High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1944 at the age of 18. He was wounded in combat in February 1945, less than one month after arriving in Europe, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He served in the European Theater through the end of the war, and was honorably discharged in 1947. He then returned to Nebraska, where he devoted his life to farming and family.
