BROKEN BOW, Neb. — A new barbecue competition aimed at bringing more activity to the Custer County Fairgrounds will debut April 11, featuring food, drinks and local pitmasters competing for top honors.
The first annual “Beat the Heat BBQ Challenge” is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, at the Custer County Fairgrounds in Broken Bow. The event is open to the public beginning at 5 p.m. and will be held rain or shine.
Admission is $20 at the gate. Organizers say the event will feature a beer garden and opportunities for attendees to sample a variety of barbecue while enjoying a social, outdoor setting.
The competition will include cooking teams competing in five categories, giving attendees a chance to taste and compare different barbecue styles.
The event is part of a broader effort by the Custer County Ag Society to expand programming at the fairgrounds and bring more events to the community.
“We’ve got a lot of new energy on the board right now. It’s very exciting,” said Mark Cardoza of the Custer County Ag Society. “We’re looking at doing more events at the fairgrounds and bringing more to Custer County.”
Organizers are promoting the event as both a competition and a community gathering, encouraging residents to “come and sample the best BBQ around” while enjoying food and drinks with friends.
Cardoza said the barbecue challenge is one of several new events being planned as the board works to increase year-round use of the fairgrounds.
