A York man is behind bars for his third DUI after authorities allegedly found 22 whiskey bottles during a traffic stop.
The York County Sheriff’s Office says at around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, a sergeant stopped a vehicle that was traveling westbound on Interstate 80 just a couple miles east of the York interchange for expired registration.
Upon contacting the driver, identified as 44-year-old Dean Schmid of York, the sergeant detected the smell of alcohol.
After a required observation period, authorities say Schmid submitted to a preliminary breath test, which indicated a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15%.
Schmid was arrested and transported to York County jail.
A subsequent chemical breath test showed a BAC of 0.16%, double the legal limit in Nebraska.
During inventory of the vehicle, deputies located 22 empty or partially empty whiskey bottles.
Authorities say Schmid had two prior convictions of DUI out of Lancaster County within the past 15 years.
Schmid was arrested for Aggravated DUI – 3rd Offense, and No Valid Registration.
The York County Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists that impaired driving continues to be a serious threat to public safety. Drivers are urged to plan ahead, utilize designated drivers, and never operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
