As the 2026 planting season gets underway across the Plains, soil moisture — or the lack of it — is emerging as the dominant concern, according to the latest USDA Crop Progress report.
While calendar timing remains largely normal for mid‑April, much of Nebraska and Kansas is entering the early stages of planting with significant moisture deficits, raising questions about crop emergence, early growth, and pasture conditions if meaningful rain does not arrive soon.
In Nebraska, corn and soybean planting have not yet begun, a situation that still fits well within the historical average for this time of year. Field conditions did offer some encouragement last week, with 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork statewide, allowing producers to prepare ground ahead of broader planting activity.
However, preparation is one thing — moisture is another.
USDA reports that 79 percent of Nebraska’s topsoil is rated short to very short, including 42 percent very short, while subsoil moisture shows nearly the same level of stress. Only about one‑fifth of the state’s topsoil is considered adequate, with no surplus moisture reported.
Those conditions do not necessarily delay planting right away, but they do raise concerns about uniform emergence and early root development, particularly if dry weather persists deeper into April and May.
Kansas Also Feeling the Pressure
In neighboring Kansas, planting has begun in earnest, but moisture challenges remain front and center.
Corn planting in the state reached 9 percent complete, matching the five‑year average and showing steady progress from last week. Soybean planting has also started, coming in at 2 percent planted, slightly ahead of normal for mid‑April. Producers logged 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork, helping move planting forward where moisture and soil conditions allowed.
Yet Kansas soils remain under strain. Topsoil moisture is rated 60 percent short to very short statewide, with subsoil moisture slightly better but still stressed in many regions, especially across western and central Kansas.
Pasture and Forage Outlook Tied to Rain Timing
The dryness extends beyond row crops and is beginning to factor into pasture and forage outlooks, particularly as temperatures warm and spring growth accelerates — or stalls.
In parts of Nebraska, subsoil moisture shortages could limit grass development, affecting both grazing conditions and hay prospects if rainfall does not improve. While USDA pasture ratings tend to respond later in the season, the connection between subsoil reserves and early grass growth is already a growing concern among producers watching forecasts closely.
National Picture Shows Normal Pace, But Local Risks Rising
Nationally, corn planting across major producing states is running close to average, and soybean planting remains early overall. But the USDA report reinforces that, at least locally, planting pace is not the primary issue — moisture is.
With long‑range forecasts remaining uncertain, much of the region is now entering a critical window. Timely spring rains over the next few weeks could quickly stabilize outlooks for both crops and forage. Without them, producers may have to contend with challenging early‑season conditions as planting accelerates.
For now, the message from USDA data is clear: the calendar says “go,” but the soil is still waiting on rain.
