Residents of Sumner are free to go back to their homes after a wildfire forced an Evacuation on Thursday night. KRVN news director Dave Schroeder has this conversation with Dawson County Emergency Manager Brian Woldt.
A grass fire southeast of Sumner erupted Thursday afternoon. Numerous fire departments, water trucks along with tractors and discs responded. The community of Sumner was ordered to be evacuated as a precaution. By 8:30pm, Dawson County Emergency Manager Brian Woldt lifted the evacuation order but, did not declare the fire contained.
Buildings in Eddyville and Overton were opened up for evacuees. No homes were damaged as of 8:30pm but, one firefighter was injured while riding in a fire truck.
Highway 40 east of Sumner was closed in both directions for a period of time.
No official word on the cause of the fire but, some speculated it was a flare-up from a previous fire earlier in the week and fanned by shifting wind directions.
