The Broken Bow City Council approved multiple Planning Commission appointments, financial resolutions, and the city’s annual tax increment financing report during Tuesday’s meeting, where Council member Russ Smith had an excused absence.
Council members approved several Broken Bow Planning Commission board appointments with varying term lengths. The board started with the board reappointment for the James Duncan, Susan Porter, and Jim Giradin were approved to serve on the board for three year terms ending in April of 2029. Nicolle Bailey was also reappointed for a two year term ending in April 2028.
Newly elected to the Planning Commission was Luke Wassom for a two year term ending in April of 2028 and Hunter Thomas for a one year term ending in April of 2027.
During the meeting Mayor Rod Sonnichsen noted the importance of those serving on boards and commissions.
City Administrator David Schmidt also encouraged residents to consider serving on local boards, noting opening remain available, including positions on the Board of Public Works. Applicants must live within the corporate limits of Broken Bow.

In addition to the appointments, the council approved Resolution 2026-06, authorizing the closure of recently acquired city credit cards due to high fees and usability concerns. Schmidt provided feedback to council members regarding the new credit cards.
The city will return to the previous accounts, which remained open.
The Council members also approved Resolution 2026-07, the UMB Bank organized resolution, allowing expanded access for city personnel to manage credit card communications.
Further approved was the city’s annual tax increments financing (TIF) reports for 2025, a yearly required document outlining active redevelopment projects and associated tax impacts.
Rounding out the meeting, Mayor Sonnichsen thanked fire department personnel, law enforcement, and emergency and medical responders for their efforts during the fires and for keeping them away from Broken Bow. City council members echoed his appreciation.
“Your efforts are noticed and thank you,” Sonnichsen said.
The next City Council meeting will take place on May 12, 2026 at 6:00PM at the Broken Bow Municipal Building.
