Nebraska’s primary is May 12 and if you’re among the nearly one in four Nebraskans who does not belong to a political party, you have choices at the ballot box.
Hall County Election Commissioner Tracy Overstreet says nonpartisan voters can still take part in key federal races but have to request a ballot.
“Nonpartisan voters in Nebraska are the only voters that can request a ballot. They will get their nonpartisan ballot, for any of the nonpartisan races like school board, city council, state Board of Education, Board of Regents, Legislature. Those nonpartisan races will be on there, but they can also request a party ballot to vote for congressional representation,” Overstreet said.
Nonpartisan voters can still vote in races for U.S. House and Senate.
“We encourage all of those nonpartisan voters who make up about 23% of the the voters across Nebraska to, vote for all the races that that are available to you, which means you’re nonpartisan ballot and also that party ballot for Congress,” Overstreet said.
Voters who do not have a party affiliation will get a ballot listing the strictly nonpartisan races like school board but then have the option to request a congressional ballot from Democrats, Legal Marijuana Now, Libertarian, or Republican parties.
It’s important to note that nonpartisan voters do not vote twice on the same race; Nonpartisan voters will not have any Congressional races on their nonpartisan ballot if they do not request the additional ballot.
