Oxford, Neb. – The Oxford Volunteer Fire Department responded to a wildfire along the Republican River on Thursday evening. Mutual aid was requested, and crews from Arapahoe, Beaver City, Edison, Orleans, and Stamford were on the scene.
Firefighters worked quickly to rake and dig a perimeter, preventing the fire from spreading. The blaze burned approximately two acres before it was fully contained and extinguished.
According to the Oxford Volunteer Fire Department, the fire was caused by a tractor.
As dry conditions continue across South Central Nebraska, the Oxford Fire Department wants to remind everyone how easy it can be for fires to ignite. Strong winds can make any fire turn into a dangerous and deadly situation.
In a social media post, they wrote, “A small spark can quickly turn into a fast-moving grass fire…please check equipment, avoid parking in tall grass, and report fires immediately.”
The Oxford Volunteer Fire Department also thanked all responding units whose quick work helped get things under control.
