Banks Back First Responders
La Vista, Neb. — To assist in relieving the burden placed on first responders and fire departments, the Nebraska Bankers Association (NBA) has established the Banks Back First Responders fund.
The NBA is working with the Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighters Association (NSVFA) to ensure dollars raised provide a wide range of assistance to organizations in need.

As of late April 2026, historic wildfires in Nebraska destroyed over 800,000 acres, setting a new state record.

The blazes, heavily concentrated in central and western Nebraska during March, included the massive Morrill Fire (over 600,000 acres) and the Cottonwood Fire (100,000+ acres), with additional fires in the Sandhills.

Through the new initiative, That’s a Red Flag, NBA member banks will have access to educational tools and resources they can share with their communities throughout Fraud Awareness Month and beyond.
The campaign is designed to help Nebraska banks educate their customers and communities about “red flags” of fraud and scams, while empowering consumers to recognize suspicious activity before financial harm occurs.
Lt. Gov. Joe Kelly joined bankers from across the state at the NBA Convention and announced a proclamation signed by Gov. Pillen declaring May as Fraud Awareness Month in Nebraska.

Travis Sears, vice president of bank operations with Union Bank & Trust in Lincoln, was selected as the chair of the NBA. His one-year term begins immediately.
