A 49-year-old Grand Island man pled no contest on May 4, 2026 in Dawson County District Court to one count of Attempted Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute of at least 28 grams but less than 140 grams. District Judge Chawnta Durham accepted the plea and found David Rempel guilty of the charge.
The reduced charge was part of a plea agreement reached in which defense attorney Brandon Dugan said that at the time of sentencing, if the pre-sentence investigation recommends probation, then the State will recommend the same. Judge Durham informed Rempel that the Court does not have to follow the sentencing recommendation which carries a possible penalty of 50 years imprisonment.
Deputy Dawson County Attorney Corey Burns stated the nature of the case. He said on January 10, 2025, the CODE Drug Task Force conducted a controlled purchase of methamphetamine in Overton using a confidential informant. The informant and another man went to the Overton residence of David Rempel, known as “Grizzly” to obtain a quarter pound of the drug. Rempel left the residence and returned with the drugs to the informant and the other man.
Rempel’s sentencing is set for 2:30pm on July 6, 2026 in Dawson County District Court.
