Childhood accidents seem to be part of growing up. Unfortunately, preventable accidents remain the number one cause of death for children in rural areas. Central NE Farm Safety 4 Just Kids is pleased to announce the return of their annual Progressive Agriculture Safety Day! The program is designed for ALL youth who live in a rural area, and not just those who live on a farm or ranch. According to Kayla Hinrichs, coordinator of Central NE FS4JK, “while there are many advantages to growing up in rural communities, farms and ranches, there are also opportunities for accidents and tragedies from recreational vehicles, equipment and machinery. Children are exposed to potential hazards daily.
The Farm Safety Day is planned for Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at the Valley County Fairgrounds. Registration forms have been sent to area schools and parents should look for the forms being sent home with their children. Forms are also available at some area businesses, local UNL Extension Offices, and the Ord NRCS office. This year, parents have the option of completing the registration via the QR code found on the registration form. More information is available on the Central IV 4-H and Nebraska Extension Facebook page or on the Nebraska Extension website Click Here
It is anticipated that interest in attending will be very high this year, so early registration is encouraged. Registrations will be accepted until May 15th, or until the attendance is full – on a first registered basis. Please remember to use the QR code on the form; or send the completed registration to the address on the form and do not return the form to the school. There is no charge to families registering before the deadline of May 15th. Each participant will receive a free lunch courtesy of GreenAmerica Biofuels of Ord, a take-home goodie bag, and a safety day T-shirt and cap.
Children attending this year will participate in interactive sessions that reinforce the importance of taking responsibility for their own safety, respecting parents’ safety rules and sharing safety tips with their family and friends. Hands-on demonstrations reveal the hidden hazards of rural surroundings and teach participants how to avoid injury and what to do should an accident occur. Demonstrations this year will focus on: Fire Safety; Farm Equipment Safety; Powerline Safety; Super Lungs, Super Life-Protecting Your Inner Hero; Animal Safety; Tick-Tag-Go; and Rules of the Road for Bicycles, Hover Boards and Scooters.
Many generous donations from local sponsors, businesses and community members ensure that each safety day is a fun and valuable learning experience, and that each participant will receive a goodie bag full of fun and useful safety and health items for themselves and their families to use this summer.
