HWY 21 is now open going both directions.
A grass fire prompted the closure of Highway 21 south of Broken Bow on Thursday morning after flames spread to both sides of the roadway.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the fire during the 9 a.m. hour. By late morning, Nebraska 511 reported Highway 21 was closed in both directions between Oconto and Broken Bow as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
Departments responding to the fire include Broken Bow, Merna, Oconto, Ansley, Comstock, and Sargent.
The fire developed as Custer County remains under a Red Flag Warning through 10 p.m. Thursday. Weather conditions are expected to include wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour, low humidity near 18 percent, and temperatures approaching 90 degrees, creating dangerous fire conditions across the area.
