North Platte Police Department is leading an investigation into the death of a Lincoln County Detention Center inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell at 7:54am Sunday June 7, 2026.
Police Sgt. Jerimiah Johnson says jail staff immediately began life-saving efforts at the scene on 48-year-old Matthew McCarthy. McCarthy was transported to Great Plains Health and later flown to UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital in critical condition.
McCarthy later died while receiving treatment, and authorities say the cause and manner of death have not yet been determined. The North Platte Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is handling the case, with findings to be forwarded to the Lincoln County Attorney and a grand jury for review. Officials say no further information will be released until that process is complete.
