The Custer County Ag Society received updates on successful recent events, approved its annual insurance renewal, and continued discussions on fairground improvement projects during Thursday’s monthly meeting.
Recent Events
General Manager Clay Hayes reported a successful Nebraska Ranch Horse Association event held at the fairgrounds in late May. According to Hayes, the event generated approximately $5,600 in revenue and received positive feedback from organizers.
Hayes said organizers were pleased with the facilities and have discussed expanding from one two-day event to two three-day events in 2027 due to strong participation and interest in returning to Broken Bow.
Board members noted that horse-related events continue to bring visitors to the community while generating revenue for the fairgrounds through stall rentals, camping, and facility use.
Discussion also included preparations for the upcoming demolition derby scheduled for Saturday, June 13. Board members reported that advertising efforts are complete, and preparations for the event are nearly finished.
County Fair Preparations
Custer County Livestock Systems Extension Educator Troy Walz provided updates on county fair preparations. Walz reported that fair banners and plaques have arrived, and planning continues for the livestock auction and carcass contest.
Walz also informed the board that food costs have increased compared to previous years, but indicated preparations for the fair remain on schedule.
Board members discussed coordination with Broken Bow Livestock Market regarding assistance with the livestock auction and transportation logistics following the sale.
Fairground Improvements
Several ongoing improvement projects were discussed during committee reports.
Board members reported that new lighting has been installed in the indoor arena, significantly improving visibility throughout the facility. Additional discussions focused on potential lighting additions near the east end of the arena and evaluating shadows created by overhead fans.
The board also received updates on the ice machine project. Andy Gibbons reported that the water line boring has been completed, and the ice machine arrived this week. Concrete work is expected before the unit can be installed and operational.
Additional improvements include repairs to camper electrical pedestals, continued installation of fiber internet infrastructure, and discussions about purchasing a utility trailer to assist with moving portable panels and equipment around the fairgrounds.
The board also discussed plans for additional livestock tie-out areas ahead of the county fair. Members considered options for materials, labor, and volunteer assistance to complete the project before fair activities begin.
Grant Funding
The Ag Society received positive news regarding several grant applications.
Board members announced approval of a brick-and-mortar grant that will fund improvements to livestock working facilities inside the indoor arena. The project will include new Prefiert Roping and Rodeo setups designed to attract additional livestock events to the fairgrounds.
The board also received tourism grant funding to assist with fair operations, awards, and marketing efforts. In addition, a separate grant application for an air conditioning project was approved.
Insurance Renewal
During new business, the board approved renewal of its property and liability insurance coverage through Jones Insurance Group.
Insurance representative Kori Kieborz reviewed the policy with board members, noting premiums had a difference of approximately $2,000 compared to last year. The board discussed reviewing building valuations and coverage levels in the future as additional improvements continue across the property.
Board members unanimously approved the insurance renewal.
Camper Pedestal Project
The board opened sealed bids for the installation of additional camper electrical pedestals at the fairgrounds.
Four bids were received, with Myers Construction submitting the considered bid for the first phase of the project. Discussion focused on budget considerations and whether future campground revenue should be dedicated toward continued campground improvements.
The board voted to move forward with the proposed bid, with Andy Gibbons recused from voting due to a conflict of interest.
Other Business
Board members approved monthly financial reports and bills. Discussion also included updates on advertising signage throughout the fairgrounds, with several businesses voluntarily renewing sponsorships despite billing oversights during previous administrative transitions. In addition, the council opened discussion regarding the creation of a sponsorship fund to assist with event planning; no action was taken.
Board members Mark Cardoza and Scotti Ross were absent from the meeting.
The next regular meeting of the Custer County Ag Society will be held in July.
