Lexington, Neb. — Severe weekend storms in central Nebraska brought a mix of large hail, damaging winds, and heavy flash flooding.
Svere flooding was reported in cities like Grand Island, Gibbon, and Wood River. Floodwaters covered local streets, and agricultural fields in-between Doniphan and Hastings along Highway 2 were inundated.
Up to ping-pong-sized hail was observed near the National Weather Service office in Hastings, and hail up to 3 inches in diameter was reported near Amherst.
Strong wind gusts battered the region.
For instance, a 91 mph wind gust hit nearby areas in Kansas, while 75 mph winds were clocked in south-central Nebraska.
The winds downed trees, snapped power lines, and overturned agricultural pivot irrigation systems.
Downed power lines left thousands of residents in the region without electricity.
Additionally, public attractions like the Stuhr Museum closed temporarily to assess storm conditions.
