A new patio area is coming to the Broken Bow Library thanks to funding from a 2026 AARP Community Challenge grant.
Library Director Megan Svoboda said the project will create a welcoming outdoor gathering space for the community in front of the library. The drafted patio plan includes two ADA-accessible benches, one ADA picnic table, and four outdoor musical instruments. The design also features space for outdoor games and a shade sail for added comfort.
“We’re eager to begin our quick-action project funded by AARP Livable Communities and AARP. Through this grant, we will create a library patio to serve as a community front porch,” Svoboda said.

The library hopes the new patio will create additional opportunities for intergenerational programs, events and community activities. The Broken Bow City Administrator David Schmidt praised the project, calling the library one of the community’s greatest resources.
“The library is truly one of the crown jewels of Broken Bow,” Schmidt said. “This exciting addition to the outdoor spaces will only serve to enhance and expand the amenities that our citizens can enjoy. I am so incredibly proud of this team!”
The AARP Community Challenge grant program supports projects that make tangible improvements in communities while helping spark long-term change. The initiative is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities program, which assists cities, towns, neighborhoods and rural areas in becoming great places to live for people of all ages..
