BROKEN BOW — Fireworks stands are set to open Thursday, June 25, in Broken Bow, and local police are reminding residents to follow city ordinances while celebrating.
According to Broken Bow Police Chief Chris Anderson, fireworks may be sold from June 25 through July 4 between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. Fireworks stands are expected to open at 10 a.m. Thursday.
Within Broken Bow city limits, fireworks may only be discharged from Thursday, June 25, through Friday, July 3, between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. On Saturday, July 4, fireworks may be discharged from 9 a.m. until midnight.
Police say residents who discharge fireworks outside of those hours will generally receive a warning for a first offense. A second violation may result in a citation for disturbing the peace, depending on the officer’s discretion.
City ordinance also prohibits using or exploding fireworks inside any building, or near people or property in a way that could cause injury or damage. It is also illegal to throw fireworks from or into a vehicle, onto a street, highway or sidewalk, near another person, into a building, or into a group of people.
The ordinance allows the Broken Bow City Council to ban or further restrict fireworks sales or discharge during dry weather or other hazardous conditions.
Police also noted that Nebraska law prohibits illegal fireworks, including M-80s, cherry bombs, flying lanterns and wire sparklers. Nighttime parachutes and bottle rockets are allowed in Nebraska, while firecrackers must contain less than 50 milligrams of explosive composition.
“For your own personal safety and the safety of the community, we ask that you use caution with your display,” Anderson said. “And after your celebration, the Broken Bow Police Department requests that you clean up your mess.”
