GRAND ISLAND — Police are investigating after a man reportedly assaulted a father and attempted to take his 3-year-old daughter at Eagle Scout Park.
The incident happened around 9:45 p.m. July 5 at the park, located at 3050 N. Broadwell Ave.
Grand Island Police Division Chief Dean Elliott said a couple and their children were walking along a hiking trail when the incident occurred. The mother was walking ahead with several children, while the 39-year-old father was behind them with his 3-year-old daughter.
According to Elliott, the suspect came out from behind a bridge on the trail, punched the father in the face, and attempted to grab the child.
The father was able to keep hold of his daughter, and the suspect fled the area. The father then returned to his vehicle and called 911.
Police are asking anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have witnessed something connected to the incident to contact the Grand Island Police Department at 308-385-5400.
Possible charges against the suspect include felony intentional child abuse with no injury, felony attempted kidnapping, and misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury.
