COZAD — Two new sculptures are now on display in Cozad as part of the statewide Sculpture Walk Across Nebraska program. The pieces, Lumenfly in Veterans Memorial Park and Feather in the Wilson Public Library Art Garden, were dedicated Thursday during an afternoon arts celebration that also included a preview performance of the Crane River Theater Company’s upcoming production of Disney’s Frozen.
The sculptures were created by Maryland artist Kirk Seese and are part of a rotating public art initiative designed to bring large-scale artwork to rural Nebraska communities. Bonnie Hubbard, coordinator of the Haymaker Creative Arts and Historic District and a board member of Sculpture Walk Across Nebraska, said the program gives local residents access to high-quality public art while also supporting artists from across the country. Communities host the sculptures for about a year, though the works may be purchased by individuals, businesses, or local organizations.
Organizers say the installations are intended to inspire creativity and conversation throughout the community. Lumenfly, constructed from recycled automotive parts, depicts a stylized flying insect in Veterans Memorial Park, while Feather features colorful painted panels and now fills one of the remaining spaces in the library’s art garden. Library Director Lori Yocum said the sculpture complements the library’s recent bird-themed programming and encourages visitors to find their own meaning in the artwork. With the addition of the two installations, Cozad becomes the eighth Nebraska community participating in Sculpture Walk Across Nebraska.
