The Midwest Nebraska Problem Solving Court is thanking Michael Piccolo for his years of service as presiding judge. Judge Piccolo stepped down from the program at the end of June after being appointed to the Nebraska Court of Appeals. He served as presiding judge of the Lincoln County problem-solving court since 2019 and took on the same role in Dawson County in 2023. Court officials say his leadership helped many participants achieve sobriety and build successful, productive lives.
The Midwest Nebraska Problem Solving Court began in Dawson County in 2007 and expanded to Lincoln County in 2012. The treatment-focused program works to reduce repeat criminal offenses and substance use disorders through intensive court supervision and specialized treatment services. Officials say participants and graduates have lower rates of reoffending and greater involvement in their communities. Beginning this month, Cindy Volkmer will oversee the Lincoln County program, while Chawnta Durham will lead the Dawson County program. The court currently serves 28 participants across its two locations.
