A detached garage northeast of Cozad was destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon. According to Cozad Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Chief Jennifer Schneider, firefighters were dispatched at 1:09 p.m. to a garage fire near Road 425 and Road 763. When crews arrived, the garage was fully engulfed in flames and was considered a total loss.
The fire also spread to a small RV parked next to the structure and caused damage to the siding of a nearby garage. Schneider said no one was inside the building at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The Lexington Volunteer Fire Department provided mutual aid, sending four firefighters and two tankers to assist with water supply efforts.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Schneider praised the firefighters who responded, noting that daytime calls can be challenging because many volunteers are at work. She also expressed gratitude for Lexington’s assistance and said she was thankful the fire was brought under control quickly and that all firefighters remained safe despite the hot weather conditions.
